Why you need to take a solo trip

There is nothing more exhilarating than grabbing your passport and backpack and hitting the open road by yourself with nothing but opportunities and adventures ahead. For many people the thought of traveling alone is intimidating or even scary, the truth is that it can be an incredibly liberating and transformative experience, especially for women.

I can’t even begin to start with the incredible adventures I have had on my own. Some of them have been so surreal that I have literally pinched myself to see if it was real or if I was dreaming.

Whether you're a seasoned globetrotter or a first-time explorer, traveling solo has the power to push you out of your comfort zone, challenge your assumptions, and show you the world in a whole new light.

If you have never taken a solo trip, this is your call to put it on your bucket list for 2023 and make this the year that you take the leap and discover the world on your own terms.

Here are some of the reasons, why you need to take a solo trip:

1. Self-Discovery

Traveling alone allows you to enjoy your own company, which can lead to a profound sense of self-discovery.

When you are by yourself, you have the opportunity to get in touch with your thoughts and emotions and discover what you truly enjoy- Do I really like skiing or am I going because other people are going? Would I do this activity on my own? Where do I want to spend my time and energy and what inspires me?

When you are on your own you can pursue your own interests whether it is as simple as what you would like to eat or where you would like to stay, you call all the shots.

Want to lie in bed naked and order room service at 3 pm, you’re the boss baby, and this is your trip- enjoy what makes you feel alive as a person and remember to carry that energy when you return to your home.

2. Self-Reliance

When you're traveling solo, everything falls on your shoulders.

From navigating foreign cities to finding your way back to your hostel, choosing a restaurant you are the only one responsible for your well-being.

This can be daunting at first, especially for codependent people, but it also builds tremendous self-reliance.

You'll begin to trust your instincts and become more confident in your ability to tackle challenges. It also shows you that if you can handle traveling in XYZ city alone you can handle anything alone; this can be very liberating for many women who have never been given the opportunity to be self-reliant.

3. Make new friends

People always ask me if I get lonely traveling by myself, the truth is I really don't, and actually find life in Canada more isolating and lonely than on the road.

Once you have left your safety net and comfort zone you find a more authentic version of yourself, and when you are alone and in your zone, you will attract similar people.

If you travel with a group of friends or a significant other, you're less likely to branch out and strike up a conversation with strangers. However, when you are alone it becomes much easier to connect with similar people and because you are so connected with your authentic self you will be engaging in activities and adventures where you will naturally meet and connect with likeminded people from all over the world.

4. Personal Growth

Traveling solo is not always easy, but it's a guaranteed way to grow and develop as a person. You'll be pushed out of your comfort zone and forced to confront unfamiliar situations.

Along the way, you'll learn new skills, gain confidence, and become more self-aware. This experience can be truly transformative and stay with you for a lifetime.

5. Redefining yourself

They say with every language that you learn that you discover a new personality. The same can also be said about travel to different countries. Once you step out of your home and culture you have the opportunity to redefine yourself.

Don’t like your name, try on a new one.

Tired of your same old backstory, come up with a new one.

No one out there knows you, you can be and become anyone you want to be.

There is a big world out there full of adventure, new people and different versions of yourself out there waiting to be discovered.

British Betty might be a bit of a wet rag but Brazilian Betty is out there having a blast!

Everyone, but especially women, deserve to embrace the incredible experience that comes with independent travel.

From the freedom to make our own choices to the profound self-discovery that occurs on the road, solo travel has the power to truly transform our lives.
