Tips for cannabis tourists
Whether you've been smoking cannabis for years or are new to the lifestyle, trying cannabis in a new country is always a little trippy.
So to make sure you are prepared here are some tried and tested tips to make your cannabis-smoking travels a breeze.
- Don't take drugs on the plane
This may seem like an obvious tip, but it's worth repeating!
Never, ever, ever bring drugs on a plane.
No matter how tempting. Finish your drugs before you step foot into an airport. First of all, it is illegal to bring cannabis or any other drugs from one country to another. Even between Canada and US states where cannabis is legal, it is still illegal to bring cannabis from one country to another country.
Medical cannabis patients are also prohibited from traveling with their medication even if it is medically available in the destination country. You are not allowed to bring your prescription to different countries, and you must seek a prescription in each different country.
In Canada, cannabis regulations and products vary between provinces so while you legally can travel throughout the country with cannabis, I always advise no drugs of any kind at the airport. Nothing kills vacation vibes like a trip to an airport detainment center.
- Check local cannabis laws
Before you travel, it's important to do your research and find out the local laws regarding cannabis. Different states and countries have different regulations, so you'll need to know what's allowed and what's not. In some places, cannabis is completely illegal, so it's important to be aware of the risks before you travel.
- Discretion
Regardless of the country and the legality around cannabis, the smell of lighting up a joint can be pretty intrusive. Find a discreet place to consume where you will not bother others. If you're stopped by local law enforcement, be polite, and ask the rules and recommendations on where you can safely and discreetly consume. Do not give them your stash or any money.
- Don't hot box your hotel room:
If you have never hotboxed, well….it's really really fun.
In the old days, when smoking rooms in hotels still existed, this was a favorite vacation treat.
Hotboxing is when you close the bathroom door, run the shower, create a steam environment and then light up a joint in the bathroom with the shower running. You get high not only from the smoke but also from the lingering vapor.
While the hotel might be fine with you smoking cigarettes in the room, they are usually not as cool with you turning your room into a 420 steam room.
If you do decide to do it, be sure you are ok with paying the smoking cleaning fee, and other ancillary charges and leaving a healthy tip for the cleaning staff.
5. Ask locals
Do not go to the first dispensary or joe on the corner next to your hotel to get weed. Ask a couple of bartenders, hotel staff, go out wandering around and ask people at stores or locations where you think cannabis consumers would hang out. Ask them the rules are in the city/country and if they know where you can get it.
Always use the rule of three. Ask three different people and take the average. People will quickly tell you if something is illegal. Smoke shops and bars are always a great source for local knowledge.
Get out there, explore and have fun in a safe and responsible way!
